Is hemp the same as marijuana, or weed?

The simple answer is NO. Industrial hemp, and pharmaceutical, or recreational marijuana are not the same.

While hemp and marijuana both come from the same family of plant, the cannabis plant, they are different strains that are genetically selected for their industrial or pharmaceutical properties.

The strains of cannabis that produce low or no thc, are carefully selected and bred to produce seeds for industrial hemp that may be made into anything from string, canvas, and rope to plastics, building materials, vitamins, and even cooking oil.

What is Industrial Hemp?

Industrial Hemp typically refers to the non-psychoactive (no “high” producing) strain of the Cannabis plant that has many industrial and medical uses including vitamins and oils commonly found in health food stores.

Some of hemp’s industrial uses include: paper, textiles, construction, health food, biodegradable plastic, and even a clean burning, easily produced bio-diesel fuel called hemp-fuel.

Hemp seed oil, or simply hemp-oil, is the richest “known” source of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. Hemp seed oil also contains some essential amino acids like gamma linoleic acid, or GMA for short, which is a very rare nutrient also found in large amounts in mother’s milk. Gamma linoleic acid is a very healthy fatty acid found primarily in vegetable oils. “GMA” is also sold as a dietary supplement for treating inflammation and auto-immune diseases.
